JOB SUMMARY:
Provide a comprehensive counseling program for students and specifically provide services to meet the needs of assigned students; consult with teachers, staff and parents to enhance effectiveness in helping students
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide preventive, remedial and crisis intervention services (with specific intervention skills/techniques) to students, staff and parents, and promote and provide a constructive use of educational opportunities
- Work with students in small group settings focusing on a variety of issues such as conflict resolution and anger management
- Evaluate students who have been referred and conduct social and emotional assessments, including the ability to use appropriate instruments and conduct observations and home visits
- Consult with parents, teachers and other staff involved with the student regarding the child’s program and any adaptations needed to facilitate improved performance and attitude in the classroom or at home
- Serve as a resource liaison between the local school district and outside agencies and parents when appropriate
- Foster student responsibility, appropriate social behavior, integrity, valuing of cultural diversity, and respect for self and others by role modeling and learning activities
- Establish and maintain a positive and safe learning environment where students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process
- Interpret and use data (including but not limited to standardized and other test results) for diagnosis, instructional planning and program evaluation
- Maintain appropriate reports and records on each assigned student; protect each student’s confidentiality; and provide specific reports according to procedures or as assigned
- Act in a professional and ethical manner, comply with policies and procedures and adhere to professional standards at all times
- Perform other duties as assigned by administrators of the Mead School District
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Washington State ESA counseling certificate as required by law and regulation, or ability to obtain said Washington State ESA counseling certificate prior to first contracted day
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Demonstrate personal attributes necessary in the Counseling profession: warmth, caring, approachability, enthusiasm, and sense of humor
- Possess an understanding of the developmental stages of the early adolescent and characteristics of at-risk teens
- Demonstrate an understanding of the Becca Bill law and school processes and procedures for upholding the law in the school setting
- Demonstrate knowledge of IDEA and Section 504 Law and ability to perform coordinator responsibilities and accountability procedures
- Possess the ability to instruct/teach staff and students in a classroom setting
- Demonstrate organizational skills and ability to prioritize duties and responsibilities
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience in various forms of assessment including student self-assessment, formative assessment, portfolios and anecdotal records
DESIRED CRITERIA:
- Demonstrate an understanding of resiliency and environmental protective factors
- Possess knowledge of and experience with ASCA domains/standards
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a Student Services team
- Middle or High school counseling experience, desired
