JOB SUMMARY

The job of a Classroom Instructional Support Substitute is performed for the purpose of providing assistance to virtual classroom teachers. Responsibilities vary with individual assignment, but typically include supervising activities and large and small group instruction while overseeing onsite classroom management. Individuals assigned to these positions will be expected to commit to the duration of the position.


Essential Functions

  • Provide instructional support and assistance as needed in small or large group situations within the classroom under the guidance of the virtual teacher.
  • Provide a safe, positive and effective environment that reflects and facilitates learning.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures in accordance with the policies and procedures of the school building and the district.
  • Demonstrate interest in working with students, including those with special needs
  • Encourage and model expected behavior
  • Build and maintain a positive, caring relationship with all students
  • Work cooperatively and respectfully with all members of the school community
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for diversity among all members of the school/department or district community
  • Report to assigned duty areas promptly and reliably
  • Remain flexible to changes in assignments or situations
  • Perform other duties as directed by the building principal

 

Minimum QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associates Degree or equivalent required.  Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in any subject preferred. 
  • Previous classroom experience a plus.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Exhibits the ability to build a positive learning environment including modeling respect and honoring the dignity of all students, staff and parents.
  • Demonstrates effective classroom management procedures that provide for large and small groups, and individuals in an environment conducive to learning.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop rapport with students.
  • Skill to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance.
  • Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with all staff, students, and as a team member, both verbally and in writing
  • Experience managing student misbehavior through positive guidance
  • Ability to work with students in a warm and confident manner
  • Knowledge of student safety rules and procedures
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality

 WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be physically capable of kneeling, bending, and standing and have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs., if necessary.
  • The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  A person working in this position will exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally while carrying, pushing, and/or pulling to move objects. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unaided and may lift over 50 pounds with the assistance of another person and/or a lift assist. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit; some stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching; and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or ordinary infectious diseases carried by students.
