Campus Security Officer
8 hours per day
202 Day Position (190 Work Days +12 Holidays)
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Security/Safety Officers are responsible for the overall safety and security of the school. The Security/Safety Officer plays a critical role in the school’s culture and climate. Security/Safety Officers actively engage in supporting students in order for them to be successful in the classroom and school community. The role of a Security/Safety officer is physically demanding as they are the first line of defense to defuse and de-escalate student misconduct and/or serious incidents and must respond urgently.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Communicate safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff, and visitors.
- Patrol and monitor the campus including school grounds, parking lots, and entrances to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff and the security of the facility. Conduct building sweeps and secures specific areas as requested.
- Inspect and monitor the security of doors, windows, and gates, and detect and report fire and safety hazards.
- Ensure only authorized personnel and authorized visitors access the school.
- Assist visitors with directions and secure proper identification. Intercept unauthorized visitors and escort them to the office or exit.
- Assist with the supervision of students at all areas of the campus needing direct supervision, including bus loading areas or other areas under the control of the district.
- Assist with the supervision of School activities outside of the normal school day.
- Report any discipline infractions, unauthorized visitors, and acts of vandalism to the building administration in a timely fashion.
- Notify the building administration, police, and/or appropriate emergency personnel of any emergency, potentially dangerous, unsafe or unusual situations.
- Assist with drills, lockdowns, and emergency building evacuations.
- Make recommendations to correct security issues once identified.
- Build positive and professional relationships with students, and leverage those relationships to establish and maintain productive and safe learning environments and common areas of the building; Exercise dignity and respect when interacting with students at all times.
- Display ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school personnel, and outside agencies associated with the school.
- Administer first aid/CPR in emergency situations.
- Assist with access control & single point of entry.
- Assist with locker and backpack searches as assigned.
- As assigned, monitor the student entry and dismissal process to ensure safety.
- Model and promote student responsibility and appropriate behavior and attitude.
- Actively respond to incidents, fights or other issues in the school that threatens the safety of students, staff, and/or guests up to and including momentary physical intervention if warranted by the safety risk.
- Lead efforts to de-escalate inappropriate student behaviors and assist students with maximizing their time on task in classrooms.
- Investigate student violations of school board policies and prepare reports of the results.
- Work with school administrators and law enforcement officials in handling serious student offenses and law violations.
- Complete proper documentation related to incident reports and misconduct reports.
- Serve on site Safety Committee (standing member).
- Maintain security records, logs and reports.
- Actively participate in professional development training to ensure ongoing growth and to advance skills.
- Effectively communicate and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
- Serve as a primary participant in emergency response during crisis situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must possess a high school diploma (or equivalency) with some experience or training in a security-related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possess or be able to obtain (within 30 days) CPR and First aid Certifications.
- Knowledge of, and the ability to apply, standard security procedures and best practices.
- High level of attention to detail, initiative, and the ability to complete work in an accurate and timely manner
- Possess excellent computer software skills (e.g., Word, Access, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, search software, etc.).
- Ability to manage and maintain a high level of confidential information and records.
- Ability to maintain self-control at all times.
- Ability to diffuse and manage volatile and stressful situations.
- Ability to intervene in physical altercations or physically restrain people.
- Ability to prioritize work and multi-task effectively.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work well under pressure.
- Ability to communicate information and ideas in both verbally and in writing.
- Must be team oriented but also able to work independently.
- High level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service and demonstrated ability to work in a positive manner with staff and patrons.
- Training and/or experience in drug/alcohol abuse awareness, prevention and control; trauma (ACEs); Implicit Bias; and Motivational Interviewing preferred.
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
- Completion of college-level courses in the area of security, psychology, emergency management, or criminal justice preferred.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT AND SALARY:

The salary range for the position: Min $36.76 per hour – Max $41.40 per hour. Salary placement will be at step 1 on the appropriate scale for the position. Previous relevant experience may result in higher step placement within the posted range.
Employees working less than 260 days will receive holiday pay for the scheduled holidays within the months worked. Each employee shall accumulate twelve (12) days of sick leave per year. An employee employed less than full-time shall be entitled to a proportionate part of the sick leave allowance. A maximum of three (3) days of annual leave are provided for all employees based on the employee’s scheduled employment hours per day to be used for an absence during work hours. Unused Annual Leave is cashed out every July.
Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) Standard benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and Long-Term Disability. Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services.
